New program promotes youth running
The Southern Colorado Runners is launching a new Pueblo Pacers program
that will provide discounts to youths 18 and under who enter local road
races. Under the plan, youths will receive a $10 discount in area races,
with the plan contingent on race directors agreeing to participate by
offering kids the reduced rates.
Thus far, several races have already come on board for 2010. They include
the Spank Blasing and Panther runs in April, the Run for Rio in May, the
Run 4 Trails in September and the Atalanta 5K women’s race in November.
The Spank Blasing run also is offering a $70 entry fee package for two
adults and two kids 18 and under, with each additional family member being
able to enter for just $10.
In addition, The Pueblo Chieftain-sponsored Spring Runoff is offering
those 18 and under a $12 entry fee who pre-register by Feb. 26 instead
of the regular $18 cost for its 1.6-mil walk and 5K, 10K and 10-mile races
on March 7. There also will be two short-distance fun runs for kids (March
7 and April 17) to promote the Pueblo Pacers.
The program aims both to encourage youths to get involved in running and
to provide an incentive for more families to run together. Race directors
have the option of giving T-shirts to kids when adopting the $10 discount.
Directors of other 2010 races are urged to participate in the program,
and they will be included in Pueblo Pacers promotional material. More
