2008 SCR PREDICTION SERIES

Click for: Prediction Series General Description

All of these races are FREE (except for the Harvest Poker Run) and runners of all abilities are welcome--SCR members and non-members. Many are followed by a Pot Luck Brunch, so bring your favorite dish (or donuts or juice) to share and get ready for good food and good people. If you're shy or a new runner or just have to leave early--it's OK to just do the race and leave--do a couple of races until you feel comfortable enough to hang around. We understand.

Important: check the calendar and this page regularly as some details may change.

  • Apr. 5th - Sat 8:00 am, Ramsgate 8, 8K (about 5 miles)
This run, consisting of three possible 8K routes, begins and ends at the home of Don and Lois Pfost, 8 Ramsgate Place, located in Belmont. All three courses include great scenery, are mostly flat with some rolling hills, but nothing too strenuous, and two are about half dirt trails. Route one will head to the CSU Pueblo campus, then do a loop on the dirt trails north of the University, and come back through campus and Belmont to the starting point. New in 2007, and the preferred course if the weather holds, route two will head in the same general direction as route one, but take advantage of over 2.5 miles of dirt trails east of the CSU campus, looping back along Troy, Gamble and Massari to the starting point. If the trails are muddy from rain or snow, the run will be an all-asphalt out-and-back along Massari, north on Gamble and Troy to the CSU Pueblo campus, through campus on a gradual up- and down-hill to Walking Stick Blvd, and turn around in the cul-de-sac just west of the art/music complex. Stick around afterwards for the best part--a potluck brunch. To get to Don & Lois' find Bonforte Blvd in Belmont, head north about 1.5 miles towards CSU-Pueblo--turn rt on Endeavor, rt on Massari, rt on Ramsgate
Race Directors: Don & Lois Pfost - (719)544-9633

The run heads toward Liberty Point on dirt trails and roads then returns. No traffic and awesome views but watch your step. This is a carry your own water run but the course will be well marked. There is no pot luck after the race but refreshments will be provided by the Southern Colorado Runners. Meet in the parking lot at the Nature Center.

  • May 11th - Sun 8:00 am, Yappy Dog, 8.63 Miles
Here is a great opportunity to run where you may have never run before. The run takes place East of Pueblo in the rural area generally referred to as the MESA. After a long straight, paved, and mostly downhill stretch on South Road, the run winds and twists on dirt roads that disguise the uphill portions of the course. The race begins at South Mesa Elementary School, 23701 Preston Road--midway between 23rd & 25th Lanes and midway between County Farm Road and Preston Road. Stay for another great potluck immediately after the race hosted by the Barnhart family.
Race Director: Ross Barnhart - (719)543-6982

  • Jun. 21st - Sat 8:00 am, Belmont Butt Buster, 5mi
Starts and finishes at Franklin Elementary School, taking a long, hilly loop around Alexander Circle, heading south on Bonforte for a short distance, then a long, gradual up-hill east on Constitution, turning north at East High School, gradual up hills on Massari and Endeavor, south along Bonforte, turning onto McAlester and finishing on Yorktown. This is a nice, though challenging, run through tree-shaded residential areas with a rough balance between the up- and down-hills. A lively and tasty post-predict potluck follows the run.
Hosted by: Gina and Vince Benfatti
    Site: 1318 Horseshoe Drive, 544-1029.
Special Note: Vince's breakfast burritos are awesome!

  • Aug. 2nd - Sat 7:30 pm, Moonlight Madness, 5mi
One of the nicest runs in the entire series, this evening run begins and ends at the home of Diana Tiffany located south of Pueblo on Verde Rd. Diana schedules this 5 mile run around the full moon because it begins at dusk but finishes in the dark, so you may want to bring a flashlight. It's an out and back course on a dirt road with almost no traffic. There is water at the turn around. The best part is after the run, so plan to stick around--Diana and her helpers BBQ hamburgers and hotdog's provided by the Southern Colorado Runners while runner's bring a side dish. Remember it's free and everyone is welcome.
To get to the home: head south from Pueblo on I-25 to Verde Road (Exit 87) then 7 miles east to 5395 Verde Rd. Tip: don't wash your car before you come.
Race Director: Diana Tiffany - (719)676-7343

  • Aug. 7th - Sun 7:30 am, Tunnel Drive, Canon City, CO, 5M
This is a truly beautiful run. Starting in Canon City, CO., Tunnel Drive is a dirt nature trail that runs high above the Arkansas River. It used to have railroad tracks but they have been removed and what's left is a spectacular trail above the river, in a canyon that heads toward the Royal Gorge. You will run thru two old RR tunnels (hence the name) 2 1/2 miles out and back on well maintained wide dirt trails. It's a short steep climb up to the trail but well worth it for the fantastic views and once on top it's relatively flat. No covered dish for this race just water and snacks at the end. I don't believe there are bathroom facilities at the start so if you are driving in from Pueblo you will pass both McDonalds and Burger King on HWY 50 in Canon City and I suggest stopping there. After your stop continue west on HWY 50 past 1st Street until you see the Power Plant on your left (Old Max will be on your right). Take the first left after you pass the power plant (Rich usually puts up a sign) and you will be at the start. Hosted by Rich and Deb Hadley of Florence this race is traditionally one of our larger handicap races because of the fine turnout of Canon City runners as well as Rich's cross country team. Remember it's FREE to all.

  • Sep. 7th - Sun 7:30 am, 10.4K, South Shore of Pueblo Reservoir
If you want a challenge, this is the course for you...6.47 miles (10.4K) of Single Track on Easy, Intermediate, and Advanced Rated Trails. The course is sort of a zig-zag figure 8 loop with technical up and down hills in the Southern Colorado Desert. The run provides beautiful views, desert flora and fauna, if you dare to take your eyes off of the trail. This is a carry your own water run. The course will be marked and there will be MAPS provided.
    Course: Course Map
    • The course starts at the Pedros Point Trailhead, an easy single track trail. ¾ mile into the run, take a right turn (East) onto the advanced Waterfall/Log Drop trail. This trail takes us in/out of a shale washout, down a steep rocky/shale drop to the Log Drop, and then back into the washout. The trail heads to the South Shore Trail (one of many times on this trail), taking a left turn (North) for a quick (0.07 mile) section that is covered on the way out and way back to the finish.
    • Turning right (East) onto the Stonehenge Trail (advanced) at about 1.5 miles into the run the course climbs for about 1 mile up past ancient ruins and around The Edge trail.
    • At the top 2.5 miles into the run there is a quick left turn (North) onto the Arkansas Point Trail (easy). This section is one of only a few flat sections on the course. The run continues north to the Rodeo Trail. Taking a right on the Rodeo Trailhead through an intermediate shale washout we pass 3 miles just prior to making a left turn on to The Duke. After a short climb the course crosses back over the Arkansas Point Trail and continues west to the Hooters Canyon trail, a technical and advanced downhill. The run progresses down Hooters Canyon to the South Shore trail.
    • At the South Shore trail the course turns south (left) and continues to the 4 mile point on the run. At the 4 mile point the trail heads east (left turn) and climbs up Skull Canyon trail over ½ miles to meet for a short stint on the Rollercoaster Trail. The run then turns west (right) again and heads down Broken Hip trail passing the 5 mile point on the run. This decent is approximately ¾ mile. At the bottom of Broken Hip trail the course heads south once again on the South Shore trail for 1 mile of rolling trail to the finish.

  • Nov. 29th - Sat 9:00 am, Temple Canyon, 4M $FREE$
The following article was written by Ron Dehn and printed in our newsletter:
"In my humble opinion, the most scenic of the 10 run series is the Temple Canyon 4-mile predict run. The run starts at 9 am just outside of Canon City. According to race co-director Rich Hadley, the run is "a challenging four mile romp through the canyon lands south of Canon City, CO. This is your chance to traverse rocky single track and ford icy streams in late November. There have been broken bones on this course so be forewarned. Come and have a great time." Don't let Rich's "broken bone" warning scare you off. It was only once, and it was Rich's wrist bone. The scenery is stunning, so watch the trail, and you will be fine. The hilly trail winds around the junipers and through the stream twice. The stream is not deep, but it can indeed be icy, so you have to cross with care."
Directions: From Pueblo, go west on HWY 50 to the west end of Canon City. On 1st Street, go south (left) for approximately 2 miles. When you reach the Temple Canyon sign, turn right and follow the road until you reach the parking lot (you can't miss it) where the run begins.
Other Info: There is one port-o-pottie at the start, you may want to stop at McDonald's/Burger King in Canon. No potluck at this one but we usually drive back to Canon and have breakfast at Mr. Ed's or some local eatery.
Remember--there is no charge for this race and all are welcome--the more the merrier.
